history

the order of servites or order of servants of virgin mary created in 13th century , goal unlimited respect virgin mary. according tradition apparition happened in 1233 on day of ascension. apparition influenced 7 florentines gave existing lives , went monte senario founded monastery. servite order showed in prague first time in 1360.

the period of charles iv

the legend says king charles iv promised in front of painting in florentine monastery of servites build monastery order in czech lands cure. possible impulse founding monastery have been effort reinforce deteriorating religious life in bohemia , above in prague in second half of 14th century. charles iv asked pope innocent vi permission set new monastery in prague in 1359 , granted permission. monastery founded in 1360 , construction of church started immediately. according beneš of weitmile (the chronicler) church established next older chapel of virgin mary.

period of hussite wars

during hussite period monastery robbed prague´s citizens in 1420 , burnt down. monks monastery in exile @ time. monastery na slupi between 2 fighting sides , on 15 september 1420 inhabitants of prague built 2 big catapults near choir of monastery church. both weapons destroyed defenders. inhabitants of prague broke through southern wall, put big cannon in nave of church , able aim directly @ besieging royal garrison in vyšehrad. reason, nave newly vaulted in late-gothic period (it estimated vaulting constructed 1436 1480).

the servites returned monastery shortly after ending of hussite wars obvious documented financial gift monastery in 1439. repair of church took place after 1480. financed financial support of various donors. citizen of new town mikuláš replík had donated bell church although bell removed belfry parishioners of church of saint adalbert. , placed bell church. through numerous donations monastery poor , around 1480 monks left it. monastery passed royal holding.

the monks church of saint adalbert bought new bell church na slupi in 1498. church @ time represented Švábs chvatlin, duchk , mikuláš. symbol visible @ keystone of vault inside church.

the monastery still poor. building half ruined , in 1554 last prior, , @ time monk in monastery, ondřej bergmann, wrote letter abbot in karlov entrusted himself , church under protection. abbot of augustinian order agreed proposal.

the period after battle of white mountain

the next fate of monastery , other buildings not clear. church of our lady on lawn continued in holding of church in karlov. servites had considerable influence @ vienna court used after battle of white mountain means renewal monastery. monastery returned order in 1626. 3 monks settled in monastery subordinated servites monastery of saint michal in old town.

the unstable period around year 1648 did not allowed bigger construction works in monastery. there made urgent repairs. decided reconstruction after general prior of order visited monastery. reparation took place several years later during 1760s. seventeen monks lived in monastery in 1710. reconstruction of buildings finished in 1726. servites´s highlighting period on beginning of 18th century. amount of supporters , donors growing. monastery bought near called dlouhoveský house chapel in 1707, monastery afterwards sold establish convent of alžbětinky.

the age of enlightenment

the monastery damaged bombs during 7 year´ war in 1757. there general resentment toward european monastic life in following period of age of enlightenment. new town , old town monasteries merged in 1783. servite order cancelled on 23. 6. 1786. church of our lady on lawn secularized in 1783. monastery became artillery barrack in years 1785 – 1792, lodging house , became military educational institute in years 1822-1850.

19th century

the monastery enlarged , rebuilt in 1856 in order place there institute of mentally ill. church sanctified again in 1856.

the architect , historian of art bernard grueber (1806-1882) in charge of numerous pseudo-gothic repairs. repairs took place in years 1858-1863 (another source states years 1856-58). two-storied building of former monastery known in pseudo-gothic form. monastery rebuilt in 1910 , there located skin clinic of charles university. big part of current of church can attributed grueber, including internal furnishing of church in pseudo-gothic style. there built choir , low roof of presbytery raised. grueber designed new interior, such altar partition, doors, altars, pulpit, candlesticks , monstrance.

the last major reconstruction of church in years 1914-1916 when inner plastering replaced brickwork. reconstruction directed builder františek schlaffer.
