the type 81 incorporates elements of dragunov, sks, , ak-47 series rifles. design criteria met included accuracy of 1.78 inch r50, 50% of hits within 1.78 inch diameter @ 100 meters; improved controllability in full-automatic; same reliability of ak longer service life approximately 20,000 rounds; , able use existing ak , sks production tooling @ time.


the rifle retains general layout of chinese type 56 assault rifle (a license produced ak-47), has sks-like short-stroke gas-piston design , other improvements reduce recoil , muzzle jump, giving better firing accuracy. notable physical differences type 56 assault rifle include stock of rifle, length of action, bayonet, , positioning of front sight.


the distinguishable feature of type 81 more exposed muzzle part of barrel. front sight has been moved modification able fire rifle grenades, slid on unobstructed barrel muzzle formed spigot-type rifle grenade launcher.


there significant gap between trigger guard , magazine on type 81 rifles, while on type 56 rifle series magazine adjacent front of trigger guard.


the non-detachable swing-out spike-shaped bayonet of type 56 rifle replaced on type 81 rifles detachable knife-bayonet.


like predecessors, type 81 series of weapons. type 81 (fixed stock) , type 81-1 (folding stock) 7.62×39mm caliber assault rifles 30-round magazines, , heavier type 81 light machine gun (lmg) fitted 75-round drum magazine used in squad automatic weapon (saw) role. sight remains @ front of lmg barrel.


the type 81 can fitted picatinny rail, bipod, foregrip , flashlight.
