dodd born in grand detour, illinois son of alvin harvey dodd , edith (merrill) dodd. after regular education, studied engineering @ armour institute of technology, nowadays illinois institute of technology, obtained bs in 1905.

after graduation dodd in 1905 started career teacher of manual training in allegheny, pennsylvania. next year moved normal school in north adams, nowadays massachusetts college of liberal arts, appointed head of manual arts department. 2 years later joined north bennet street school, principal until 1912. in 1907 dodd had been elected president of eastern arts association, , around 1910 appointed director of national society promotion of industrial education. in days became acquainted woodrow wilson @ princeton university, , visited him later in white house.

in 1917 dodd appointed secretary of retail research association.. in days worked woodrow wilson , samuel gompers on smith–hughes act, signalized beginning of federal support of vocational education in agriculture, home economics, industry, , trade.

in 1916 addresses @ national education association of united states, dodd summarized bill extends states of government in establishing vocational education , in training persons teach it. done grants of money, , dy establishment of federal board of vocational education work , through states in starting form of education. purpose of proposed law not enable federal government enter educational field , establish schools rather extend such aid stimulate various states develop work themselves.

in 1917 dodd appointed president of retail research association, laid basis of first retail cooperative market research organization, later associated merchandising corporation.in 1921 joined chamber of commerce of united states, managed distribution department. in days dodd started lecturing in marketing, trade, distribution , industrial problems @ northwestern university, university of chicago, stanford university, , university of washington.

in later 1920s , 1930s dodd served in several interim-management positions. director-general of wholesale dry goods institute 2 years, assistant president of sears roebuck year, , vice-president of kroger grocery , baking company in charge of merchandising few years. 1936 1948 dodd president of american management association, , since july 1, 1948, appointed honorary president.
