as range, sourland mountain includes main ridge , smaller secondary ridges. near northern part of range, pheasant hill forms parallel rise on east flank of main ridge. south of pheasant hill, detached ridge forms pennington mountain. same ridge, continues run parallel main ridge, broken in 3 more places south of pennington mountain, forming (from north south) mount canoe, baldpate mountain, , strawberry hill. knob in shallow valley between strawberry hill , southernmost stretch of main ridge forms belle mountain. goat hill comprises highest point of main ridge before reaching southernmost end of sourland mountain @ delaware river.


partly adjacent sourland mountain sizeable traprock ridge extends eastward pennington mountain approximately 9 miles, forming (from west east) mount rose, rocky hill, , ten mile run mountain. west of main ridge, near flemington, prospect hill, volcanic remnant lying along western edge of amwell valley. hill appears geologically linked sourland mountain volcanic dike running beneath surface.
