he entered professional baseball in 1905 san antonio black bronchos, , immediate star, posting records of 28-4, 15-9, 20-8, 20-2 , 32-8. after that, chicago giants, team higher in pecking order of black baseball, acquired him. in 1910, giants owner frank leland pronounced him best pitcher in baseball, in league.


in 1911, williams joined lincoln giants of new york, helping club become 1 of premier african-american teams of era. when manager john henry lloyd departed in 1914, williams took on playing manager, post held through 1923 season. after lincolns finished ignominious fifth (out of 6 teams) in eastern colored league s inaugural season, williams released in spring of 1924.


he joined brooklyn royal giants season, signed independent homestead grays, where, except brief turn detroit wolves in 1932, spent rest of career in top-level black baseball. records sketchy, in 1914, williams credited winning total of 41 games against 3 losses. in 1929, playing grays in american negro league @ age of 43, williams won 12 games , lost seven.


barnstorming exhibitions

although barred major leagues, williams pitched many games against major-league stars in post-season barnstorming exhibitions. proved tough against them against negro leaguers, posting 20-7 record in these games. among victims grover alexander, walter johnson, chief bender, rube marquard, , waite hoyt, hall of famers. 3 different times, faced eventual national league champions. won 2 of games , lost third, 1-0 1917 new york giants despite throwing no-hitter.

on august 7, 1930, @ age 44, struck out 27 kansas city monarchs in 1-0, 12-inning victory. same year, beat younger negro league star bursting superstardom, leroy (satchel) paige, 1-0, in meeting against 1 another. williams retired baseball 2 years later.
