salt mining @ site first mentioned in 1198 deed. name hallein documented since 13th century; 1 of many hall-names in south german language area may have salt , celtic, germanic , other origins have been discussed.


from 15th century onwards, beer brewing became common in hallein. in 1489 prince-archbishop leonhard von keutschach in 1489 acquired large brewery, whereafter sale of hofbräu kaltenhausen beers became main source of revenue salzburg archbishopric. @ end of 17th century, prince-archbishop kuenburg had protestant miners expelled, after several hundred of them emigrated walcheren , zeelandic flanders in dutch republic. former prince-archbishopric, hallein became part of austrian empire 1816. kaltenhausen brewery purchased archduchess maria leopoldine of austria-este , became 1 of largest salzburg operations during 19th century.


in world war ii, hallein site of work camp annex dachau concentration camp. after war, site of permanent displaced persons camp (beth israel). in mid-1947, ort opened school in 2 of barracks, teaching tailoring, dressmaking, electrical , radio technology, baking, beautician training, , upholstery on 200 students. later ort offered english language classes. in 1948, closure of other dp camps, hallein became austrian collection point jewish emigrees canada , united states. inmates established football team named hakoah hallein, coached heinrich schönfeld. camp closed in 1954.
