main born in south shields, tyne , wear. attended st mary s church of england school in tyne dock, south shields. began football career youngster @ sunderland before being released league 2 club darlington, whom made senior debut substitute in last 7 minutes of game against peterborough united on 3 may 2008. @ 15 years 318 days, became youngest player play darlington. in february 2009, scored first goal, 86th-minute winner in match against grimsby town, 2 minutes after entering game substitute. in may 2009, main spent week on trial premier league club fulham, club preferred monitor player s progress rather make offer. other clubs reported interested included middlesbrough , newcastle united. in september 2009, main scored 81st-minute equaliser against grimsby town, in match ended 1–1 , saw darlington manager colin todd leave post shortly after final whistle.

on 30 august 2013, main joined league 1 club shrewsbury town on loan initial month. made shrewsbury debut following day substitute against coventry city , provided assist tom bradshaw in 1–1 draw. loan period not extended, , returned middlesbrough on 3 october having made 6 appearances shrewsbury in competitions.

doncaster rovers

on 30 july 2014, main signed three-year contract league 1 club doncaster rovers. transfer part of deal james husband joined middlesbrough doncaster undisclosed fee.

loan oldham

main joined oldham athletic of league 1 on 15 february 2016 on loan until end of season. in march, doncaster attempted recall main, parties had agree on return, , main refused. oldham , doncaster both trying avoid relegation league two, doncaster manager darren ferguson considered main s decision unfortunate . after main helped oldham stay while parent club did not, transfer-listed @ end of season.

portsmouth

on 4 july, main signed two-year contract league 2 club portsmouth. fee undisclosed. scored first goal portsmouth in 3–2 efl cup loss against coventry city on 9 august 2016. main made 14 appearances , scored 5 goals in 2016–17 portsmouth promoted league 1 league 2 champions.
