john rooney started @ everton youth academy @ age of six.


macclesfield town

after being released everton, rooney moved macclesfield town in 2002, signed professional terms on 14 july 2008, 4 months after professional debut against barnet on 24 march 2008. first ever career goal came against dagenham & redbridge in 2–1 loss on 28 march 2009. rooney s macclesfield contract expired @ end of 2009–10 season (after refusing sign new contract).


new york red bulls

after trials derby county , huddersfield town unsuccessful rooney went seattle sounders fc , portland timbers on trial enter next major league soccer draft. rooney signed major league soccer on 28 december 2010 , played @ 2011 mls combine in florida.


on 13 january 2011, rooney selected in second round of 2011 mls superdraft new york red bulls. made debut club on 16 april 2011 89th-minute substitute in 3–0 victory on san jose earthquakes @ red bull arena. on 28 june 2011 in first start new york, rooney scored first goal club in 2–1 victory on fc new york in open cup.


orlando city

rooney waived new york on 23 november 2011 , signed usl pro club orlando city on 26 january 2012. on 25 february 2012, in debut, rooney scored first goal club against toronto fc in walt disney world pro soccer classic in 2–2 draw. on 15 april 2012, rooney scored 2 goals , assisted goal in 4–1 win against wilmington hammerheads. on 22 may, rooney again scored 2 goals in second round of open cup in 7–0 trashing of kc athletics. on 27 july 2012, orlando city won 2012 regular season title after defeated charleston battery 4–0 (with 3 games remaining in season), result, john rooney won first championship in career. 1 day later, john rooney featured in orlando city s international friendly match against stoke city, coming on substitute rodrigo lópez in 69th minute in 1–0 loss. rooney finished season 13 appearances , 5 goals orlando eliminated in semi-final of playoffs wilmington hammerheads.


barnsley

after leaving orlando city, rooney offered contract english club barnsley in october 2012. signed contract club on 25 october 2012. released @ end of season.


bury

on 10 july 2013, bury announced had signed rooney on twelve-month contract.


chester

he loaned conference premier side chester until january 2014. made 4 appearances , scored once. in january 2014, transfer permanent signed contract keeping him until end of 2014–15 season.


wrexham

on 7 june 2016, rooney signed one-year deal wrexham. made debut club on opening day of 2016–17 season, in 0–0 draw dover athletic, scoring first goal club in following match, converting penalty during 3–2 victory on guiseley.


in february 2017, rooney joined guiseley on loan remainder of 2016–17 season after being unable agree terms on contract dispute. following return wrexham @ end of season, rooney 1 of several players not offered new deals.
