after united states entered second world war, congdon (on april 20, 1942) signed one-year contract volunteer ambulance driver american field service (in end, serve total of 3 years). served british 9th army in syria, , british 8th army in north africa (el alamein), italy (where took part in battle of montecassino) , germany: member of c platoon of afs567 (coy) 1 of first americans enter nazi death camp of bergen belsen.


apart few brief visits usa, used leave during period visit cities, art monuments , exhibitions (he himself organize ceramics exhibition in faenza in march 1945). during war, congdon made drawings of people , places encounters , recorded experiences in diary , in letters parents. few months after return united states, left again italy, volunteer quaker american friends service committee rehabilitate stricken areas, distributing aid war victims , rebuilding villages in molise.
