electricity in zanzibar dates 1900s. in 1908, first coal fired generator installed on island power stone town. in 1954 coal plants abandoned , new diesel generators installed british east africa company. in 1980 main island of unguja connected tanzanian national grid via 132kv, 45mw sub-marine cable , diesel generators decommissioned.
electricity in pemba
the first power plant on island of pemba commissioned in 1958 , called tibirinzi power station. on years government continued build small diesel generators meet growing demand. however, in 1985 government replaced tibirinzi power station , inaugurated wesha power station. power station had 3 diesel generators total capacity of 4.5 mw. pemba connected national grid through submarine cable pangani. 33kv, 20 mw cable runs pangani, tanga ras mkumbuu.
