lahti has rich sporting tradition, in various wintersports. city known annually held lahti ski games (salpausselän kisat) , finlandia-hiihto cross-country skiing contest. city host fis nordic world ski championships 7 times, doing in 1926, 1938, 1958, 1978, 1989, 2001 , 2017.


ice hockey

the pelicans have competed in top level of finnish ice hockey, liiga, since 1999. before new millennium reipas represented lahti in top-flight hockey 50 years. many former nhl players, such janne laukkanen, toni lydman , pasi nurminen, have started careers in reipas.


association football

historically city s successful association football club has been kuusysi. in golden years lasting 1980s 1990s won 5 finnish championships 2 finnish cup titles, appearances in european competitions each year. greatest rivals, reipas, won total of 3 championships , 7 cup titles 1963 1978 diminished in 1980s kuusysi got stronger.


in 1990s both clubs ended in such massive financial difficulties merger executed in 1996, newly formed club adopting new name, crest , colours. fc lahti has played in veikkausliiga since 1999, excluding season-long visit first division in 2011, placing third , appearing in europe twice.
