Processing apparatus Photographic processing

a cut-away illustration of typical light-trap tank used in small scale developing.

in amateur processing, film removed camera , wound onto reel in complete darkness (usually inside darkroom safelight turned off or lightproof bag arm holes). reel holds film in spiral shape, space between each successive loop chemicals may flow freely across film s surfaces. reel placed in specially designed light-proof tank (called daylight processing tank or light-trap tank) retained until final washing complete.

sheet films can processed in trays, in hangers (which used in deep tanks), or rotary processing drums. each sheet can developed individually special requirements. stand development, long development in dilute developer without agitation, used.

commercial processing

in commercial processing, film removed automatically or operator handling film in light proof bag fed processing machine. processing machinery run on continuous basis films spliced in continuous line. processing steps carried out within single processing machine automatically controlled time, temperature , solution replenishment rate. film or prints emerge washed , dry , ready cut hand. modern machines cut films , prints automatically, resulting in negatives cut across middle of frame space between frames thin or frame edge indistinct, in image taken in low light.
