in order stop land loss caused zuiderzee, farmers started around 1200 building of de waterlandse zeedijk. on dike village schellingwoude founded. sources of income farming , fishing. during 14th century trade coming on , became more important in 16th century, because of developing of shipping in part of holland. competition amsterdam enormous, shipping activities got less. in days schellingwoude village of distinction. surrounding villages administration of justice took place in schellingwoude. in 1622 population of schellingwoude 1048, in 1809 number dropped till 684. decline in trade , shipping activities main cause of reduction. activities remained farming, fishing , industrial activity. in 1800 schellingwoude had 2 mills. important lock, oranjesluizen, steam pumping station, ready in 1872. king willem iii laid first stone on 29 april 1870. oranjesluizen , schellingwouder bridge, built in 1957 on buiten-ij, 2 identification marks @ east side of village.


with arrival of oranjesluizen, schellingwoude got boost. lock created new jobs , new houses built. village had 5 pubs @ time.


the villages @ waterlandse zeedijk extremely stricken flood of 1916 , not on over own strength. in 1921 amsterdam incorporated villages buiksloot, nieuwendam (with zunderdorp) , ransdorp (with schellingwoude, durgerdam , holysloot).
