biography
early life

gilkeson born on january 25, 1893, in lansdale, pennsylvania. when graduated united states military academy @ west point, new york, became second lieutenant on june 12, 1915. whole year served @ douglas, arizona, in 11th infantry. in may 1917, joined signal corps @ signal corps aviation school in san diego, california , later on, same year, joined 1st aero squadron @ columbus, new mexico. on june 20, 1917, given title junior military aviator , till september commandant of school of military aeronautics @ princeton university, new jersey. september 1917 january 1918 gilkeson stationed in chanute field, illinois, after transferred rich field, texas, worked engineer officer. april august 1918 worked duty officer of flying @ wilbur wright field, ohio, after returned chanute field stayed till january 1919.

philippines

when reassigned aberdeen proving ground, maryland, became commander of 217th aero squadron in charge of till april 1919. served @ hazelhurst field, new york till joined 60th infantry @ camp gordon, georgia, october of same year. august 1920 july 1921 executive officer @ carlstrom field, florida, after same year sailed philippines, , later on came crissy field. when finished two-year duty in philippines served commanding officer of both clark field , 3rd pursuit squadron, came united states , became professor of military science , tactics @ mit.

as student, gilkeson detailed, therefore september november 1925 sent chemical warfare school @ edgewood arsenal stayed till june 1928 liaison officer united states army air corps. in july 1929, graduated air corps engineering school @ wright field, ohio, after became chief of equipment branch @ air corps materiel division on september 1931. graduated air corps tactical school @ maxwell field, worked 1st pursuit group @ selfridge field, michigan, both executive officer , duty officer. year , month serving duty @ civilian conservation corps well.

from november 1934 march 1935, sent fort sam houston, worked united states army reserve , 8th corps. during same month became commander of 8th pursuit group @ langley field. there, in september 1938, attended command , general staff college @ fort leavenworth, kansas , graduated in june 1939. after graduation worked @ albrook field, panama canal zone in charge of air base , same year took command of 12th pursuit wing.

world war ii

during war, commanding general of xxvi interceptor command march 1942 , on october 1942 became commanding general of iii fighter command. when china burma india theater broke out in march 1944, stationed @ chengdu, china in charge of 312th fighter wing. on october 1944, gilkeson served tenth air force in burma in charge of air operations precisely driving japanese out of north burma , creating ledo road burma china bombardment.
