Queen Elizabeth Land British Antarctic Territory



on 18 december 2012, foreign & commonwealth office announced southern part of british antarctic territory has been named queen elizabeth land in honour of queen elizabeth ii in diamond jubilee year. area, southern third of territory, has area of 437,000 square kilometres (169,000 sq mi) – twice size of united kingdom – , triangular in shape, south pole @ 1 apex , 20°w , 80°w lines of longitude forming eastern , western boundaries. northern boundary formed filchner-ronne ice shelf on west , coats land on east.


the name queen elizabeth land used in future on british maps, due unique status of antarctica, other countries recognise name if see fit. argentina, lays claim part of area, criticised naming.
