in original 1926 plan, u.s. 190 served purpose of modern-day interstate 12, road around north side of lake pontchartrain. western terminus in baton rouge, louisiana, meeting u.s. 71 @ baton rouge-port allen mississippi river ferry. u.s. 190 followed state route 7 (in pre-1955 louisiana highway system) east covington, state route 34 covington slidell. original eastern terminus in slidell @ u.s. 90 (now u.s.11) @ modern intersection of front street , gause boulevard.


in 1935, route extended west across mississippi river, ending in west texas town of brady @ intersection u.s. 87.


u.s. 190 assigned additional 150 miles (240 km) across sparsely-populated area south of san angelo, texas in 1979.


louisiana

the original 1926 route followed jefferson highway through downtown baton rouge, la 426 (old hammond highway) amite river. east of baton rouge, significant differences current alignment follows: la 1032 through denham springs; la 1027 walker; la 43 , 1040 (old baton rouge highway) between albany , hammond; south range road , la 1067 (old covington highway) between hammond , tangipahoa river; , u.s. 190 business through covington.


west of baton rouge, current alignment follows same route since extension texas in 1935. major re-routing between deridder , elton, original route followed la 26. portion between oberlin , elton re-routed in 1937 follow u.s. 165 kinder before assuming current alignment between deridder , kinder following year. other differences current route follows: la 110 through merryville; la 3099 deridder; la 3253, 1244, 31, , 742 between opelousas , port barre; old u.s. 190 between bayou courtableau , krotz springs , between east krotz springs, louisiana krotz springs , lottie; la 77 between livonia , rosedale; , la 76 between rosedale , port allen.


in 1937, u.s. 190 took on original route of u.s. 90 slidell rigolets bridge (along current u.s. 11 , la 433) when highway assumed current routing mississippi. u.s. 190 given current eastern terminus @ u.s. 90 in 1940s, following u.s. 190 business (fremaux avenue) through slidell until 1970s when shifted onto gause boulevard.


in 1951, u.s. 190 re-routed along u.s. 51 business (mainline u.s. 51 @ time) , la 22 between hammond , mandeville. new route passed through ponchatoula , madisonville , bypassed covington. former route through covington restored in 1956.


the current u.s. 190 near krotz springs, louisiana, elevated highway. road built bypass around road called old 190 continues across morganza spillway western edge of lottie. u.s. 190 crosses atchafalaya river on 2 cantilever bridges known krotz springs bridge. crosses mississippi river on 1940-era huey long bridge north of baton rouge.


the route used alternate route interstate 10, across atchafalaya expressway. traffic can diverted along la 975 krotz springs, , la 76 u.s. 190/la 1.
