joseph walton losey iii born on january 14, 1909 in la crosse, wisconsin, , nicholas ray high-school classmates. attended dartmouth college , harvard university, beginning student of medicine , ending in drama.

from 1946 1947, losey worked bertolt brecht—who living in exile in los angeles—and charles laughton on preparations staging of brecht s play galileo (life of galileo) , brecht co-directed laughton in title role, , music eisler. play premiered on july 30, 1947, @ coronet theatre in beverly hills. on october 30, 1947 losey accompanied brecht washington dc brecht s appearance before house un-american activities committee (huac). brecht left following day. losey went on stage galileo, again laughton in title role, in new york city opened on december 7, 1947 @ maxine elliott theatre. more 25 years later losey, in exile in england, direct film version of brecht s play galileo (1975).

seymour nebenzal, producer of fritz lang s classic m (1931), hired losey direct remake set in los angeles rather berlin. in new version, released in 1951, killer s name changed hans beckert martin w. harrow. nebenzal s son harold associate producer of version.
