desulfobulbus propionicus gram-negative, ellipsoidal lemon-shaped bacteria, average length of 1.0 1.3μm , width of 1.8 2.0μm. d. propionicus functions anaerobic chemoorganotroph. 3 strains differ in shape, motility, , presence of fimbriae.



metabolism

desulfobulbus propionicus anaerobic chemoorganotroph. d. propionicus uses methylmalony-coa pathway ferment 3 moles of pyruvate 2 moles of acetate , 1 mole of propionate. desulfobulbus propionicus utilizes propionate, lactate, pyruvate, , alcohols environment not electron sources, carbon sources well. hydrogen gas (h2) utilized electron donor in presence of carbon dioxide , acetate. assumed name, desulfobulbus propionicus reduces sulfate, sulfite, , thiosulfate hydrogen sulfide (h2s), not reduce elemental sulfur, malate, , fumarate. when sulfate absent ethanol fermented propionate , acetate. in absence of electron acceptor, d. propionicus produces sulfate , sulfide elemental sulfur , water. also, desulfobulbus propionicus strains 1pr3 , 3pr10 can grow in defined minimal media addition of vitamin 4-aminobenzoic acid, whereas strain 2pr4 not show additional requirement. furthermore, 2pr4 strain of 3 show growth butyrate electron donor , carbon source, however, growth slow compared other substrates.

of 3 strains within desulfobulbus propionicus, 1pr3 have genome sequenced. sequenced in 2011 pagani et al. strain 1pr3 found encompass genome size of 3,851,869 bp, g-c content of 58.93%. pagani et al. predicted 3,408 genes in genome of 1pr3, 3,351 genes encode proteins. genome contains 57 rna genes , 2 rrna operons. furthermore, there 68 pseudo genes makes 2.0% of total genome size.


ecology

desulfobulbus propionicus inhabits anaerobic freshwaters , marine sediments. among 3 strains, differ in: temperature ranges, optimal temperature, ph range, optimal ph, , nacl concentration requirements (1pr3 , 2pr4 show slowed growth above nacl concentration of 15 g/l, , 3pr10 shows no growth below 15 g/l).
