Data Visible Human Project
cryosection through abdomen of human male, including upper extremities.
the male cadaver encased , frozen in gelatin , water mixture in order stabilize specimen cutting. specimen “cut” in axial plane @ 1 millimeter intervals. each of resulting 1,871 “slices” photographed in both analog , digital, yielding 15 gigabytes of data. in 2000, photos rescanned @ higher resolution, yielding more 65 gigabytes. female cadaver cut slices @ .33 millimeter intervals, resulting in 40 gigabytes of data.
the term “cut” bit of misnomer, yet used describe process of grinding away top surface of specimen @ regular intervals. term “slice,” misnomer, refers revealed surface of specimen photographed; process of grinding surface away entirely destructive specimen , leaves no usable or preservable “slice” of cadaver.
the data supplemented axial sections of whole body obtained computed tomography, axial sections of head , neck obtained magnetic resonance imaging, , coronal sections of rest of body obtained magnetic resonance imaging.
the scanning, slicing , photographing took place @ university of colorado anschutz medical campus, additional cutting of anatomical specimens continues take place.
