in 1949, st. john terrell began new experience presenting summer stock theatre under arena-type (circus) tent in lambertville, new jersey, music circus. began new period of outdoor theatre. in 1951 new style of summer stock made way west addition of sacramento music circus.
the cape cod music circus (now melody tent) in hyannis, massachusetts opened in 1950, third tent theatre open, , south shore music circus in cohasset, massachusetts followed in 1951. tent theatre had opened earlier in florida.

another theatre in round, valley forge music fair (which closed in 1996), in devon, pennsylvania, opened in 1955 shelly gross, lee guber , frank ford. opened other theatres in round, including shady grove music fair in washington, dc, painters mill music fair in maryland (closed in 1991), , westbury music fair on long island, opened in 1956. 1957, there 19 tent theatres, many located in massachusetts, new york, , new jersey, , presenting musicals only. the theatre in round concept brought broadway-style musicals northern california under big top tent each summer. original producers russell lewis , howard young presented first production, show boat, same opening production @ both lambertville , south shore music circus. original lambertville theatre closed in 1970, , both sacramento , south shore theatres continue thrive today. in sacramento, live musicals in round presented in new permanent complex, wells fargo pavilion. south shore music circus , cape cod melody tent serve intimate settings musical acts including popular singers, oldies groups, , orchestras.
