early years

marcantonio s date of birth unknown, 1482 @ latest. possibly born in argine, near bologna, italy, assumed have grown up. trained in workshop of leading goldsmith , painter in bologna, francesco francia. vasari claimed marcantonio demonstrated more aptitude francia, , started designing , producing fashionable waist-buckles (among other items) in niello (engraved metal filled in alloy in contrasting colour). doubted, however, arthur mayger hind, sees no evidence of background in niello technique in engravings.

no paintings produced marcantonio known or documented, although drawings survive. first dated engraving, pyramus , thisbe, comes 1505, although number of undated works come years before this. 1505–1511, marcantonio engraved 80 pieces, wide variety of subject matter, pagan mythology, religious scenes. works use own compositions, combining elements francia , other north italian artists, , italian printmakers in these years affected enormously accomplished prints of dürer, distributed in italy. other printmakers such giulio campagnola, borrowed elements of dürer s landscapes in cut , paste fashion, , borrowed technique. dürer in bologna in 1506, michelangelo, , may have met 1 or both of them.

about time began make copies of dürer s woodcut series, life of virgin. extremely common practice, although engravers copied other expensive engravings rather cheaper woodcuts. dürer s woodcuts had raised standard of medium considerably, , since marcantonio continued copy large number of both dürer s engravings , woodcuts, must have found profitable.

his copies included dürer s famous ad monogram, , dürer made complaint venetian government, won him legal protection monogram, not compositions, in venetian territory - important case in evolving history of intellectual property law.

marcantonio appears have spent of last half of decade in venice, no dates known.

rome

around 1510, marcantonio travelled rome , entered circle of artists surrounding raphael. influence began showing in engravings titled climbers (in reproduced part of michelangelo s soldiers surprised bathing, called battle of cascina). after reproduction of work raphael, entitled lucretia, raphael trained , assisted marcantonio personally.

another famous engraving, judgement of paris, dated 1515 or 1516, after raphael, became composition source Édouard manet when painted luncheon on grass.

the 2 started successful printing establishment under colorgrinder, il baveria, expanded engraving school marcantonio @ head. among distinguished pupils marco dente (marco da ravenna), giovanni jacopo caraglio , agostino de musi (agostino veneziano).

later years

marcantonio , pupils continued make engravings based upon raphael s work, after raphael s death in 1520. in many instances, marcantonio not copy finished painting, instead worked sketches , drafts. method produced variations on theme , moderately successful.

around 1524, marcantonio briefly imprisoned pope clement vii making modi set of erotic engravings, designs of giulio romano, later accompanied sonnets written pietro aretino. @ intercession of cardinal ippolito de medici, baccio bandinelli , pietro aretino, released, , set work on plate of martyrdom of st. lawrence after bandinelli.

during sack of rome, in 1527, forced pay heavy ransom spaniards , fled in poverty. unclear stayed after departure rome until death in 1534.
