the region, studies of multiple deprivation, shows similarities yorkshire , humber, , more deprived neighbouring east midlands. indices of deprivation 2007, can seen that, in common northern england, region has more lower area super output areas in 20% deprived districts in 20% least deprived districts. region s deprived council districts, in descending order, birmingham (10th highest in england), sandwell (14th), stoke-on-trent (16th), wolverhampton (28th), walsall (45th), coventry (61st), , dudley (100th). these have labour mps except conservative mp in walsall, 1 in sandwell, 1 in dudley, , 1 in wolverhampton (wolverhampton south west), , lib dem mp birmingham yardley.


the least deprived districts in 2007 (before shropshire became unitary authority in 2009) bromsgrove, south staffordshire, warwick, wychavon, , lichfield. these areas, rural areas of west midlands, have conservative mps. @ county level, least deprived areas, in descending order, warwickshire, worcestershire, solihull, staffordshire, , shropshire.


in march 2011 region had second highest overall unemployment claimant count in england @ 4.7%, second north east england. highest in region wolverhampton @ 7.7%, joint second highest (with manchester) unemployment rate in england. next sandwell 7.1%, birmingham 7.0%, , walsall 6.4%. lowest rate in region district of stratford-on-avon, 1.6% - 1 of lowest unemployment rates in england.

in 2015 general election, conservatives gained largest share of region popular vote , took control of number of seats, 42% of region s electorate voting conservative, 33% labour, 16% ukip, 6% liberal democrat , 3% green. conservatives gained 2 seats virtually no swing labour conservative.

although having smaller percentage of vote neighbouring east midlands, geographic area of west midlands more conservative, due labour s vote consigned urban areas of birmingham, coventry , stoke-on-trent. number of seats more favoured towards labour geographic spread, 35 conservative seats , 24 labour. of warwickshire, staffordshire (except newcastle-under-lyme), herefordshire, worcestershire , shropshire conservative.
