early career

william kid nance born on august 2, 1876 in fort worth, texas, , began professional baseball career @ age of 18 when played 2 different clubs in class-b minor league baseball texas-southern league during 1895 season. first, joined fort worth panthers left team shortly thereafter join sherman orphans, team began play season. texas-southern league became class-c texas association in 1896, , nance re-joined panthers, however, august team folded, , completed season galveston sandcrabs.


major league career

though panthers had restarted operations 1897 season, nance stayed sandcrabs, signed louisville colonels of national league later year, making major league baseball debut on august 19 of season. has distinction of being first person fort worth play in major leagues. appeared in 35 games colonels, right fielder, although played in center field. had .242 batting average in 120 @ bats, hit 3 home runs, , scored 25 runs. began 1898 season colonels, after 22 games played , .316 batting average, released club; completed season paterson weavers of atlantic league, joining them on may 31.


in 1899 , 1900, moved north play minneapolis millers of western league, league renamed american league in 1900. nance played third baseman millers, , had .268 batting average in 129 games played 1900 team. began 1901 season grand rapids furniture makers of western association, signed detroit tigers of american league. nance appeared in 132 games tigers season, starting left fielder. in 466 @ bats, collected 129 hits .280 batting average, hit 3 home runs, , led american league in sacrifice hits 24. season, on july 13, 1901, nance had six-hit game @ bennett park, in tigers defeated cleveland blues 19-12 in 9 innings.


return minor leagues

from 1902 until mid-season 1905, nance played kansas city blues (known cowboys in 1903) of class-a american association, although in 1902, independent team. remainder of 1905 season , entire 1906 season, played toledo mud hens, of american association. in 1907, split playing time between trenton tigers of tri-state league, , sioux city packers of new western league. returned texas league in 1908, playing full season waco navigators, in 1909, rejoined fort worth panthers, while playing stint shreveport pirates.


in 1910, nance departed texas league full season in cotton states league jackson tigers, return panthers 1911 season. in 1912, began season panthers, later played 2 other texas league teams, beaumont oilers , san antonio bronchos.


in 1913, nance re-joined panthers, time player-manager , remained in capacity entire season. began 1914 season, again player-manager, although team in fifth place on july 7, replaced jake atz, team s second baseman. move did not improve team s place in standings, finishing season in fifth place, , nance had moved on play austin senators , waco navigators of texas league, , oklahoma city boosters of western association. nance returned panthers in 1915 player-manager, similar result, departing on june 15 when team while in fifth place, again atz replacement.


in 1916, nance managed terrell terrors of class-d central texas league. later became manager of texas christian university s baseball team. playing tampa smokers of florida state league in 1921, when invited play washington senators of american league, when arrived in tampa spring training, though did not make club. noted local fan favorite due hard work , aggressiveness. in 1923, became smokers manager. during spring training in 1924, senators came tampa once again, , nance enlisted assist training of catchers, , reported going offered contract well; however, there no record of serving team in capacity. in 1925, nance smokers general manager when introduced future hall of fame catcher, al lópez, , gave him tryout. after watching 17-year-old lopez play, nance signed him contract worth $150 month in salary.


nance died on may 28, 1958 @ age of 81 in hometown of fort worth, , interred @ shannon rose hill memorial park.
