the vast bulk of unitaf s total personnel strength provided united states (some 25,000 out of total of 37,000 personnel). other countries contributed unitaf australia, bangladesh, belgium, botswana, canada, egypt, ethiopia, france, germany, greece, india, ireland, italy, kuwait, morocco, new zealand, nigeria, norway, pakistan, saudi arabia, spain, sweden, tunisia, turkey, united arab emirates, united kingdom , zimbabwe.


the u.s. central command (uscinccent) established joint task force (jtf) somalia perform operation restore hope. marine expeditionary force (i mef) staff made core of jtf headquarters. (the name of command started cjtf somalia changed united task force-unitaf). cjtf commanded marine forces mef (referred marfor) , army forces 10th mountain division (referred arfor), air force , navy personnel , units. there special operations forces components, in addition forces provided countries contributing us-led, combined coalition.


the national contingents co-ordinated , overseen u.s. central command, however, relationship between centcom , contributing nations varied. there few confrontations on methods , mandates employed contingents. example, italian contingent accused of bribing local militias maintain peace, whilst french foreign legion troops accused of over-vigorous use of force in disarming militiamen. canadian contingent of operation known canadian operation name operation deliverance. following somalia affair probe, canadian airborne regiment disbanded.
