5500-4500 bc: neolithic archaeological culture of vinča occupied large area of central balkans.
4th century bc: establishment of dardanian kingdom.
393 – 358 - reign of bardyllis in dardania
335 – 295 - (approximately) reign of cleitus illyrian (the son of bardyllis) in dardania
295 - 290 – reign of bardylis ii in dardania
231 - 206 – reign of longarus in dardania
206 – 176 – reign of bato of dardania
2nd century bc: roman empire conquered illyria in 168 bc. central balkans prior roman conquest held illyrians, thracians , celts, while kosovo region inhabited triballi, thracian tribe.
87–27 bc: dardani settled in southwest of triballi area in 87bc. dardani possibly illyro-thracian. dardanians defeated gaius scribonius curio , latin language adopted main language of tribe many other conquered , romanized. eastern dardania thracian throughout roman rule. thracian place names survives romanization of region.
6-9 – great great illyrian revolt against roman empire
2nd century ad:

ulpiana (later byzantine justiniana secunda) founded, during rule of trajan. settled roman legionaries of unknown descent. romans colonized , founded several cities in region.
florus , laurus, constantinopolitan twin brothers worked stonemasons, killed 300 fellow christians after building church on site of greek temple in ulpiana. proclaimed christians martyrs.


284: emperor diocletian established dardania separate province out of territory of moesia superior capital @ naissus (niš). however, in ptolemy s geographia (written in 2nd century), dardania separate unit.
4th century:

325: bishops dardania , macedonia salutaris attend council of nicaea, deal arian heresy.
343–344: bishops dardania, new epirus , old epirus attend council of sardica.


5th century:

christianity begins spread throughout region.


441: invasion of huns illyria.

479: ulpiana destroyed. king theodemir sent son theodoric great 3,000 soldiers destroy city.


6th century:

517: great barbarian incursion .
518: earthquake, destroying 24 strongholds in dardania.
fl. 535–565: emperor justinian (r. 527–565) rebuilt ulpiana, naming justiniana secunda after founding justiniana prima in 535.
slavs mentioned in balkans during justinian rule (527–565), when 100,000 slavs raided thessalonica. balkans settled sclaveni , in relation antes settled in eastern europe. large scale slavic settlement in balkans begins in 580s. slavs lived in sklavinia (lit. slav lands).


fl. 893–927: church in sočanica is, @ latest, built during reign of bulgar simeon i. in use in 11th , 12th centuries according grave finds. in reign of grand prince uroš ii, site known sečenica , defended byzantines newly built fortress @ galič, protecting bridge on ibar , road ras. site draws continuity municipium dardanorum.
ca 960: constantine vii writes de administrando imperio, in serbia has city of dresneïk, among others, possibly modern drsnik, in metohija.
ca 1090: serbian grand prince vukan (r. 1083–1112) began raiding byzantine territory, first in vicinity of kosovo.
between 1166-1168: nemanja, serbian royalty held parts of kosovo , southern serbia proper, defeats older brother , serbian grand prince tihomir @ pantino (south of zvečan), usurping throne.
13th century:

between 1217–1235: peć metoh founded saint sava.
1253: serbian see transferred Žiča monastery of peć (future patriarchate) archbishop arsenije after hungarian invasion. serbian primates had since moved between two.
in 1289–1290, chief treasures of ruined Žiča monastery, including remains of saint jevstatije i, transferred peć.
