the film begins shelby (mischa barton) driving @ night while crying , smoking cigarette, drops , hits standing in path of car.

mike (matt long), shelby s ex-boyfriend, has new girlfriend, elizabeth (jessica stroup), , preparing go mt. bliss, mike s hometown, because football team going retiring jersey. shelby has problems bank bowling alley inherited when mother died , still believes , mike still item. after football game mike , elizabeth decide go shelby s bowling alley. when shelby sees mike kisses him, mike tells has new girlfriend.

shelby befriends elizabeth , after few tequila shots, drunk elizabeth says going meet mike s parents after. shelby tells mike s parents on judgmental, making elizabeth nervous. wanting give first impression mike s parents, elizabeth decides go motel , sleep intoxication off, gets driven nearest 1 mike s policeman cousin billy. arrives @ check-in, man behind counter tells there not rooms left because of homecoming football games , nearest motel 4 miles away. mike goes home see mother, tells him 1 of friends said new girlfriend got drunk @ alley. mike tells since elizabeth wanted make impression, decided stay @ motel. mike s mother questions him why elizabeth think that, implying shelby lied elizabeth.

elizabeth begins walk road suitcase, looking drive motel. while driving shelby crying , smoking cigarette seen in beginning scene of film. elizabeth tries flag car down , becomes person shelby hits. after crash, shelby puts in car , takes home her. @ house shelby takes care of elizabeth using medical supplies left on when mother sick.

the next morning mike tries call elizabeth phone goes voicemail. elizabeth wakes in shelby s house. confused, asks shelby happened. fearing go jail hitting elizabeth, shelby tells found in road victim of hit , run. elizabeth suffered extensive bruising , broken ankle. shelby tells elizabeth left message on mike s voicemail telling him elizabeth was, lie. shelby sedates elizabeth.

shelby walks bowling alley elizabeth s car. elizabeth wakes @ shelby s house. while shelby gone car, manages out of bed injured ankle , hobble shelby s bedroom. finds covered in pictures of mike , shelby when still sm + md written everywhere. shelby returns , elizabeth hobbles room accidentally detaches photo strip of shelby , mike wall in haste. shelby finds strip , realizes elizabeth has been in room. punishment dislocates elizabeth s bad foot. mike , billy go motel billy dropped off , receptionist tells him elizabeth never checked in motel. go bowling alley elizabeth left car , see no longer there since shelby stole , hid in barn @ house. shelby looks through elizabeth s suitcase , takes gift intended mike, planning give gift him own.

billy later tries convince mike take shelby back, since still loved him after rejected numerous times. mike agree, however, go out drinks night. @ bar, mike sees shelby there , follows bathroom. shelby , mike begin passionately kiss, mike says cannot cheat on elizabeth though seems have deserted him. leaves shelby in bathroom begins cry.

the next day, mike, thinking elizabeth left him ex-boyfriend, gets text shelby on elizabeth s phone saying happening fast. lies on couch looking @ phone s display of no new messages .

elizabeth finds herself locked in bathroom. after rummaging around, discovers taped inside of cistern lid polaroid pictures of shelby s mother dying, revealing shelby had killed her. there paper titled poisonous plants , form showing no autopsy had been performed @ shelby s request. fearing own murder approaching, elizabeth scours bathroom looking way out. finds screwdriver , uses on door escape.

shelby gets home visiting mike give him jacket , opens bathroom door find room empty. turns around met cistern lid in elizabeth s hands. elizabeth takes shelby s jacket , hobbles down stairs, out front door barn, finds locked car. in frustration, elizabeth hits car causing alarm sound. shelby runs barn , subdues elizabeth. shelby calls stupid bitch , pulls car keys jacket s pocket. ties elizabeth duct tape. while s lying on floor, elizabeth tells shelby knows mother. elizabeth tells her parents rich , promises run away , not tell if shelby release elizabeth , accept money parents. shelby ignores , uses pruners cut out elizabeth s achilles tendons. shelby gags elizabeth , locks in basement.

mike prepares big ceremony retire football jersey, wearing jacket shelby gave him. billy stops shelby s house see if wanted ride. while shelby talking billy, elizabeth manages shut off power. billy offers fix it, shelby dismisses offer, saying shall later. billy insists , enters basement flashlight, seeing elizabeth bound , gagged. shelby creeps down behind him, strikes him in chest axe , takes gun. shoots him dead, puts body in barrel , burns it.

at high school mike being honored, stands in bathroom , takes off jacket, see elizabeth s initials on it. realizing shelby had stolen jacket, thinks shelby must holding elizabeth captive. runs house confront hears elizabeth in basement , goes down her. after short standoff, shelby shoots him in leg. altercation follows, resulting in shelby fainting. carries elizabeth upstairs , stops rest in kitchen.

shelby comes , after more fighting attacked elizabeth mike s football helmet. tells stop, , when does, shelby reaches gun. elizabeth continues beat helmet. after that, mike picks elizabeth off feet , carries out.

the film fades home video of shelby , mike kissing , laughing turning off camera. final shot of shelby s eyes opening, revealing still alive.
