by 1912, longden sr. had saved enough money send wife , young son join him in canada. however, longdens train late getting port of southampton, , missed scheduled voyage new york city on titanic.


as young man, longden jr. worked in mining industry. love of horses , horse-racing led him leave canada in 1927 seek opportunities jockey in california s burgeoning racing scene. based @ santa anita park, 1956 had become thoroughbred racing s winningest rider, breaking record of 4,870 wins british jockey sir gordon richards (1904–1988). longden, called pumper fellow jockeys because of riding style, rode many of great thoroughbreds of day. in 1943, captured united states triple crown of thoroughbred racing winning kentucky derby, preakness stakes , belmont stakes aboard count fleet. sculptured bust of longden, along busts of fellow jockeys william shoemaker , laffit pincay, has been placed in paddock area @ santa anita racetrack in arcadia, california.


a founding member of jockeys guild in 1940, longden united states leading jockey in races won in 1938, 1947, , 1948. leading jockey in purses won in 1943 , 1945. voted prestigious george woolf memorial jockey award in 1952.


in 1958, longden inducted national museum of racing , hall of fame. retired following year jockey wins in racing history 6,032 victories 32,413 mounts. last ride in 1966 san juan capistrano handicap @ santa anita park, won aboard george royal in stretch duel. clubhouse @ santa anita park contains oil painting of finish of race. image used cover of santa anita official program during 1967 racing season.


longden operated racing stable under name alberta ranches ltd. in partnership longtime friend max bell. on january 28, 1971, longden s wife hazel became first woman train stakes winner @ santa anita park when horse diplomatic agent won san vicente stakes. longden s sons eric , vance longden both became horse trainers.


following retirement riding, longden turned training , became person ever win kentucky derby both jockey , trainer when captured 1969 derby frank mcmahon s colt majestic prince. longden inducted canadian horse racing hall of fame on formation in 1976. went on become second ever recipient of avelino gomez memorial award in 1985, given annually jockeys have made significant contributions sport. in 1994, recognized further north american racing industry special eclipse award.
