after mayor quimby makes offensive joke france, , refuses apologize, french president launches neutron bomb directly springfield, killing except homer, had been inspecting bomb shelter considering buying herman s military surplus store. after blast, homer emerges shelter , seems person in town survive blast, confronted band of hostile springfield citizens have become mutants. homer flees home discovers family survived blast because house protected layers of lead paint. marge , children kill mutants shotguns hiding behind backs , family head off steal ferraris.
