career

suguri began skating @ age 5 in alaska. when returned japan, began formal training under coach nobuo sato, ten-time japanese national champion.


in 1994, while visiting practice rink 1994 world championships, suguri taught triple lutz jump michelle kwan, competing in event.


1996–97 2001–02

suguri became japan s national champion first time in 1997. second national title came in 2000–01 season. went on win gold @ 2001 4 continents, becoming first japanese woman win competition.


in 2001–02, suguri won third national title , competed @ 2002 winter olympics, placed 5th. month later, won bronze medal @ 2002 world championships behind michelle kwan , irina slutskaya. bronze medal @ worlds first medal japanese woman @ world championships since yuka sato won title in 1994.


2002–03 2005–06

in 2002–03 season, suguri won fourth national title. awarded gold @ 4 continents , repeated bronze medalist @ world championships, time behind kwan , elena sokolova.


in 2003–04, suguri won gold @ nhk trophy , bronze @ cup of china, qualifying grand prix final. stood atop podium @ final after defeating sasha cohen become first japanese woman take gold @ competition. suguri left sato after 2004 world championships after lost 2 competitions miki ando, coached sato @ time. moved chicago in united states train oleg vasiliev in autumn of 2004.


in 2004–05 season, suguri placed fourth @ both of grand prix assignments. after placing third @ japanese championships, won third 4 continents title. finished fifth @ world championships. after japan skating federation refused let continue working vasiliev, suguri returned sato , after ando left him.


in 2005–06 season, suguri won fifth national title, competing against mao asada , shizuka arakawa. placed fourth @ 2006 winter olympics in turin, italy, , concluded season silver medal @ 2006 world championships, having finished second kimmie meissner. became first japanese woman earn 3 world championship medals.


2006–07 2009–10

in 2006–07 season, suguri finished fourth @ japanese championships behind younger competitors mao asada, miki ando , yukari nakano, , missed spot world championships held in home country. competed @ 4 continents championships withdrew due injury after falling on 2 jumps in short program. @ end of season, suguri left sato again felt overshadowed nakano, training sato @ time.


for 2007–08 season, suguri decided train in russia alexander zhulin, had choreographed programs in previous season. due zhulin s marital problems, had spend of time igor pashkevich. @ japanese national championships, suguri placed third after short program, stumbled in free program, finishing fourth overall, and, again, missed spot on world championship team.


during 2008–09 season, suguri chose train coach nikolai morozov in hackensack, new jersey. there, able improve jumping ability. first competition of season skate canada placed second behind joannie rochette. next competition cup of russia, led after short program, placed third in free skate, , finished third, overall. @ 2008/2009 japanese championships 5th after short program due fall on triple flip. in long program landed 5 triples , scored 121.27 points, winning long program , placing second overall behind mao asada. suguri made world team first time in 3 years. placed 6th @ 2009 4 continents , 8th @ 2009 world championships.


suguri left morozov in summer of 2009 train alexei mishin in russia, saying wanted work on triple/triple combinations , triple axel. mishin neglected suguri , spent of time igor pashkevich. finished 7th @ 2010 japanese national championships.


2010–11 present

in march 2011, suguri stated continue competing next season, , possibly until 2014. began working regular employee in sports marketing division @ sunny side , gained sponsorship @ medical company, yoshindo.


suguri unsuccessful in effort reach 2011–12 japanese nationals, finishing 12th in qualifying competition. dealing ankle injury. in 2016, competed in first adult skating event.
