unosom ii area of operations.


unitaf intended transitional body. once secure environment had been restored, suspended unosom mission revived, albeit in more robust form. on 3 march 1993, secretary-general submitted security council recommendations effecting transition unitaf unosom ii. noted despite size of unitaf mission, secure environment not yet established , there still no effective functioning government or local security/police force.


the secretary-general concluded therefore, that, should security council determine time had come transition unitaf unosom ii, latter should endowed enforcement powers under chapter vii of united nations charter establish secure environment throughout somalia. unosom ii therefore seek complete task begun unitaf restoration of peace , stability in somalia. new mandate empower unosom ii assist somali people in rebuilding economic, political , social life, through achieving national reconciliation recreate democratic somali state.


unosom ii established security council in resolution 814 on 26 march 1993 , formally took on operations in somalia when unitaf dissolved on 4 may 1993.
