the greek historian herodotus conveyed anecdote psamtik in second volume of histories (2.2). during travel egypt, herodotus heard psammetichus ( psamṯik ) sought discover origin of language conducting experiment 2 children. allegedly gave 2 newborn babies shepherd, instructions no 1 should speak them, shepherd should feed , care them while listening determine first words. hypothesis first word uttered in root language of people. when 1 of children cried βεκός (bekós) outstretched arms, shepherd concluded word phrygian because sound of phrygian word bread . thus, concluded phrygians older people egyptians, , phrygian original language of men. there no other extant sources verify story.
