born in madrid, sainz began career in karting. in 2008 won asia-pacific kf3 title, finishing runner-up in spanish championship. in 2009 won prestigious junior monaco kart cup, , runner-up in european kf3 championship.

formula bmw

sainz raced in formula bmw europe in 2010 eurointernational team. part of red bull junior team programme. made formula bmw début during guest drive in formula bmw pacific series @ sepang. because guest driver, ineligible score points, first races in malaysia went well, managed second place @ opening race. impressive debut followed 4th place. on following race day, retired in first race won second race. impressive start got him place @ red bull junior team. doctor helmut marko applauded sainz , strong start great career in motor racing. came 7th in following race yet again amazed winning again. missed next races in china came in singapore. finished in 6th in first race , 2nd in second race. denied thought @ malaysian track. missed japanese races shortly returned season finale in macau win. overall, in 9 races achieved 3 pole positions, 2 wins , 2 fastest laps.

in formula bmw europe, started career in series podium position of 3rd , 6th place @ circuit de catalunya. @ zandvoort, took 5th , 2nd place. @ valencia scored lowly 7th , 10th place take 18 points out of possible 60 jack harvey took lead championship. weekend @ silverstone saw him take 3rd place , victory in following race, first season. hockenheim saw him take 11th , 6th place. 4th , podium position of 3rd enlightened championship hopes robin frijns on charge, scoring podium position in every race bar 3, 2 finished in 4th. double retirement @ spa put end championship dreams. 8th , 6th @ season finale @ monza followed. finished season 4th 227 points.

sainz competed in uk formula renault winter cup, finishing 6th in first race , retiring second race @ snetterton.

formula three

during 2012 season, sainz raced in both british , euroseries formula 3 championships. won 5 races , finished 9 times on podium, scoring pole position, in british championship, finishing in sixth position. scored 2 podiums , 2 pole positions in euroseries championship, in first venue, finishing in ninth position overall.

in 2013, sainz signed arden compete in gp3 series. red bull racing juniors race arden co owned red bull boss christian horner , driver mark webber. first race weekend in series went not expected. during first qualifying session of year, managed qualify in 5th place , 5 tenths off pole sitter kevin korjus. however, alex fontana , patrick kujala penalised 10 places ignoring yellow flags during free practice. during beginning of race 1 sainz jr managed 13th place gaining 2 places passing alex fontana , jimmy eriksson off start. start of lap 3, 13 seconds behind leader due him being stuck in traffic. carlos had made way 8th place teammate daniil kvyat until both cars lacked grip. because both pushing top ten points, neither driver decided manage pirelli tryes , end of race, kvyat 20th , sainz jr managed 15th place , never gained or lost positions. however, worryingly him finished 51 seconds off first placed man tio ellinas. sainz started in 15th place race 2 on sunday morning. @ end of lap 1 managed gain amazing 6 places find himself in 9th place. approached lap 2, safety car deployed due accident behind. gave sainz crucial time save tyres , make sure did not fall of cliff did in previous race. yelloly getting tap car behind , getting spun round @ final chicane, sainz 8th place 5 laps. during next lap, managed put brilliant move on jack harvey s art car move 7th place. sainz looked going try brake late round outside, harvey moved block him sainz moved across sell him classic dummy move , instead sent inside complete move. 2 laps go, tio ellinas tyres going off sainz in race 1. caused cars ahead of him bunch failed past , remained in 7th place time crossed line pass chequered flag in 7th place earn 2 gp3 world championship points. however, post race scrutineering revealed sainz car underweight , disqualified final results race 2. ended scoring no points during difficult weekend not sainz red bull junior teammate kvyat retired during race due contact driver.

in valencia qualifying session race 1, sainz qualified in 8th place, yet again setting lap time 5 tenths off pole sitter. race got underway, made great moves move 5th place first sector. remained in position right till end of race remain 4 seconds behind winner. in race 2, started in 4th place , managed 3rd place end of lap 1. remained in position , finished on podium first time. before weekend, sainz had not got championship points. time weekend over, sainz had managed obtain 24 world championship points, 4 fastest laps in both races. in 6th place in championship , looking healthy in title fight.

it bad weekend sainz @ silverstone in both races got poor results. in qualifying race 1, managed qualify in 5th place, time 3 tenths off pole sitters time. squeezed off wide , had concede few places end in 9th place. mid distance, looking , looked better when managed overtake williamson 8th place. meant on course pole race 2. short lived williamson got past him @ maggotts corner. coming through wellington straight 2 laps go, williamson had speed pull alongside sainz try , overtake sainz kept moving on towards him until there contact. williamson sent spin whilst sainz continued circulate round track. due damage on car, sainz fell down order until crossed finish line in 13th place. in race 2, finished started, in 13th place.

formula renault 3.5

sainz competing dams during 2014 formula renault 3.5 series, @ nürburgring. took fifth of 7 victories during 2014 season @ nürburgring, en route championship title.

sainz raced in formula renault 3.5 first time in 2013. however, because more focused on gp3 @ time missed several races in first season. in monaco 6th after difficult start gp3 season. had double retirement in spa. missed moscow , austria races returned @ hungary take 7th place in race 1 22nd in race 2 after few problems. in france, @ circuit de paul ricard had double retirement. in last race weekend of year in catulunya, retired in race 1 managed score 6th place. finished season in 19th place 22 points.

in 2014, switched teams dams. in season opener @ monza finished 18th in first race won second. left monza 25 points, beating previous seasons score 3 points. win @ aragon meant doubled score , in race 2, finished in 4th. 4th place followed @ 1 race in monaco. weekend @ spa followed 2 wins. moscow followed , did not perform well. 14th , 6th meant took 8 points possible 50. @ nurburgring gp circuit, won race 1 in race 2, retired. in hungary, no match roberto merhi led half minute rest of field in wet. 6th place followed in race 2. in france, won , scored total of 50 points extend championship lead on merhi.

toro rosso (2015–2017)

sainz @ 2015 malaysian grand prix

sainz announced test both red bull , toro rosso teams during young drivers test in silverstone. on 28 november 2014, announced drive scuderia toro rosso in 2015 season. partnered max verstappen @ toro rosso, in 2015, following daniil kvyat s promotion red bull. sainz selected 55 race number. qualified inside top ten début, @ 2015 australian grand prix, , finished race in ninth position. in third free practice session of 2015 russian grand prix, sainz lost control of car going turn 13 of sochi autodrom, hit wall , went on crash tecpro barriers. after spending night in hospital, allowed race next day did not finish race. in usa went finish 7th last points of year. finished 15th in first season toro rosso.

2016 season

he finished 9th in australia, following retirement in bahrain. in china, again finished 9th. following no points in russia, finished 6th in spain, 8th in monaco , 9th in canada before not finishing in baku. went on record 3 8th places in austria, britain , hungary. later had streak of no points until usa, finished in 6th place, did not score points in mexico, 6th place in brazil , no points in abu dhabi. finished 12th in driver standings 46 points.

2017 season

sainz started off season 7th in australia. in china, made boldest move in field 1 on dry tyres. worked , finished 8th. did not finish in bahrain after colliding lance stroll when coming out of pits resulted in 3 place grid penalty @ next race, russian grand prix, went on finish 10th. in spain, once again finished 7th before current season best 6th place in monaco holding off lewis hamilton. did not finish in canada, involved in first lap clash romain grosjean took out felipe massa. finished 8th in baku before finishing 7th in hungary after not finishing in points in austria , retiring in great britain due collision teammate. finished in 10th @ spa , 14th in monza. @ malaysian grand prix, retired due engine problem while driving alongside pierre gasly, replaced kvyat weekend. retired japanese grand prix well, after crash.

renault (2017)

during weekend of singapore grand prix, in finished in 4th position, announced leave toro rosso race renault in 2018, during 2017 japanese grand prix weekend, announced sainz replace jolyon palmer @ renault beginning 2017 united states grand prix, kvyat returning toro rosso take old place. in first race renault, sainz finished race in 7th , outqualified nico hülkenberg, feat jolyon palmer failed throughout year, although meant little hülkenberg opted not post lap time in q2 due impending grid penalties. less impressive performance followed @ next race in mexico. qualified 9th, 3 , half tenths down on hülkenberg in 8th, , started race in 7th following ricciardo s engine penalties. after first lap, found himself in 5th place, behind hülkenberg, after championship contenders vettel , hamilton collided @ start of race. however, sainz spun in high speed section of track , flat-spotted tyres , forced pit , came out in 19th place, damaged , delayed mercedes of lewis hamilton behind. remain @ tail-end of field until retired race steering problems.
