history

the mansion began shooting lodge, john rolls (1776–1837), , original manor house expanded throughout next 1 hundred years. first of 3 expansions rolls family began architect george vaughan maddox, rebuilt parts of south wing in 1830. john rolls s successor, john etherington welch rolls, continued mansion s development, using thomas henry wyatt architect. wyatt extended house in period 1837–41, creating great hall , improving park, including addition of gate lodges on monmouth road, , continued enlargement of south wing, both east , west, between 1837 , 1858.


in 1872, development began again removal of old stables , building of present coach house , loose boxes. @ same time, core of present house, being billiard room, smoking room , dining room, added. these final 2 stages of expansion undertaken john etherington welch rolls s son, j. a. rolls. raised peerage 1st baron llangattock, rolls employed first henry pope, completed dining room wing and, secondly, sir aston webb, added cedar library.


immediately after second world war private boys boarding school briefly established @ hendre. ardmore school catered british , foreign students dr jones headmaster. school appears not have flourished, london gazette of 20 december 1949 lists dr jones, present address(..)unknown, lately residing @ , carrying on business @ ardmore private school, hendre.. bankruptcy hearing.

hendre, handsome mansion of brick , stone, in norman , tudor styles. house constructed of red brick, dressed bath stone , comprises courtyard bounded west low wall , on 3 other sides ranges of buildings. above porch carved motto, beloved of victorians, reading open house open heart . decoration flamboyantly neo-norman, gargoyles , grotesque animal corbels (breaking) out wherever 1 looks. front has 2 storeys , 7 bays, second, third , fourth belonging house of 1820s. east, scale , grandeur of dining room range demonstrates j. a. rolls s escalating ambitions. lastly, wing added sir aston webb 1896, comprising cedar library , later service wing, represents house @ social , architectural peak.

the interior reflects house s expansion, wealth , influence of family increased, small highly decorated rooms of 1820s, through great hall of 1858, , lastly dining room suite , cedar library of late victorian/edwardian apogee.
