the building s unconventional style made subject of criticism. given nickname la pedrera , meaning quarry . casa milà appeared in many satirical magazines. joan junceda presented traditional easter cake means of cartoons in patufet. joaquim garcia made joke difficulty of setting damask wrought iron balconies in magazine. homeowners in passeig de gracia became angry milà , ceased greet him, arguing weird building gaudí lower price of land in area.

administrative problems

casa milà caused administrative problems. in december 1907 city hall stopped work on building because of pillar occupied part of sidewalk, not respecting alignment of facades. again on august 17, 1908, more problems occurred when building surpassed predicted height , borders of construction site 4,000 square metres (43,000 sq ft). council called fine of 100,000 pesetas (approximately 25% of cost of work) or demolition of attic , roof. dispute resolved year , half later, december 28, 1909, when commission certified monumental building , not required have strict compliance bylaws.

the owner entered la pedrera in annual barcelona artistic buildings competition (ca; es) sponsored barcelona city council (ayuntament). other entries in competition included 2 works sagnier (calle mallorca 264, , 1 on corsica , av. diagonal), casa gustà (ca) architect jaume gustà (ca; es), , casa pérez samanillo (ca), designed joan josep hervàs (ca; es). although dramatic , clear favorite casa milà, jury opined though facades complete, there s still lot left before s completed, finalized , in perfect state of appreciation. winner in 1910 samanillo perez, building houses headquarters of [1] circulo ecuestre.

design disagreements
