the 1895 u.s. open first u.s. open, held on friday, october 4, @ newport golf club in newport, rhode island. horace rawlins won inaugural u.s. open title, 2 strokes ahead of runner-up willie dunn. canadian amateur andrew smith, carded rounds of 90-86=176, finished tied third place.


1896 u.s. open

smith, canadian amateur player, scored on shinnecok hills course. rounds of 78-80=158 put him in tie third place. did not win prize money due amateur status.

the 1896 u.s. open held july 18 @ shinnecock hills golf club in southampton, new york. james foulis won first u.s. open title, 3 strokes ahead of runner-up horace rawlins, defending champion. first open, sideshow u.s. amateur. however, there 35 entrants , 28 finished 36 holes.


before play began, several players signed petition stating not play if john shippen, african-american, , oscar bunn, native american, allowed play. petition denied, however, , players relented. shippen, caddie @ shinnecock hills, shot opening round of 78, placed him 2 of leader joe lloyd. in position win championship until 11 on 13th hole of final round. finished tied 6th place. james foulis, third-place finisher in inaugural u.s. open year before, recorded rounds of 78-74 prevail 3 on defending champion horace rawlins. foulis s 74 set record not broken until 1903, after rubber-core ball had come use.


at 4,423 yards (4,044 m), shinnecock hills played shortest course in u.s. open history. next u.s. open 90 years later, in 1986, when raymond floyd won fourth , final major.
