the clark oxygen electrode laid basis first glucose biosensor (in fact first biosensor of type), invented clark , lyons in 1962.


this sensor used single clark oxygen electrode coupled counter-electrode. clark electrode, permselective membrane covers pt electrode. now, however, membrane impregnated immobilized glucose oxidase (gox). gox consume of oxygen diffuses towards pt electrode, incorporating h2o2 , gluconic acid. rate of reaction current limited diffusion of both glucose , oxygen. diffusion can characterized membrane both oxygen , glucose, leaving variable oxygen , glucose concentrations on analyte-side of glucose membrane, quantity being measured.
