main facade , portals


construction of structure began in 1258, , church consecrated in 1371. church has latin cross layout 3 naves, divided hexagonal pilasters. tall hexagonal bell-tower near apse completed in 15th-century, , copper-sheathed cupola (1548) , ribbed ceilings not completed until 16th century. main facade in narrow alley, , has 3 portals, each peaked tympanum , thin elaborate pilasters. thee central portal decorated highly sculpted travertine marble detached column lions atop capitals, showing persisting romanesque influences. the top of tympanum has sculpture of lamb, symbol of guild of wool merchants, patronized construction.


the east flank of church encompasses 5 arches of loggia dei mercanti (1513), designed bernardino da carona. west flank of church abuts chiostro maggiore.



monument julius ii


along right flank of church, facing piazza del popolo, lateral entrance surmounted monument pope julius ii (1506–10). entrance has rounded arch flanked receding sets of corded pilasters. lunette above door has fresco. monument above pedestal has statue of seated pope in act of blessing, inside rounded niche, flanked statues of holy figures each in niche. plaque below translates to: julius ii pontifex maximus, restored liberty , expelled tyrants. people of ascoli erected statues in year of our savior 1510 monument honors pope imprisoning ghibelline tyrant, astolto guiderocchi, had taken control of city in 1504.


a few meters north of portal of julius, on outer wall of right transept, aedicule built against church. consists of portal structure iron grill protecting venerated image of madonna adoring son. protruding rounded tympanum angel , garland sustained 2 corinthian columns. aedicule has 3 rounded steps in front. tradition attributes design (1639) lazzaro morelli, pupil of bernini, others attribute silvio giosafatti.


the 17th-century travertine pulpit completed antonio giosafatti. presbytery has 3 apses. ogival windows frame stain glass windows. sacristy contains , altarpiece depicting jesus , apostles cola dell amatrice. contains paintings biagio miniera, , nicola monti (depicting blessed beato corrado). adjacent building, former franciscan monastery has 2 cloisters. larger cloister, chiostro maggiore called piazza della verdura houses daily food market.
