the regulierspoort before fire
the tower part of regulierspoort, 1 of main gates in amsterdam s medieval city wall. gate, built in years 1480, consisted of 2 towers , guard house.
after gate went in flames in 1618 fire, guard house , part of western tower remained standing. tower rebuilt in amsterdam renaissance style in 1620, eight-sided top half , elegant open spire designed hendrick de keyser, featuring clockwork 4 clockfaces , carillon of bells.
the name of tower refers fact guard house on side of used mint coins in 17th century. in rampjaar ( disastrous year ) of 1672, when both england , france declared war on dutch republic , french troops occupied of country, silver , gold no longer safely transported dordrecht , enkhuizen (where coins minted), guard house of munttoren temporarily used mint coin.
the present guard house not original medieval structure 19th-century fantasy. original guard house, had survived fire of 1618 relatively unscathed, replaced new building during 1885-1887 in neo-renaissance style. architect willem springer underpass between tower , building made during 1938-1939 renovation.
the munttoren received new foundations prevent sagging during construction of noord/zuidlijn, new metro line. city has allocated 1.9 million euros purpose, according may 17, 2006 report in newspaper het parool.
