history

the state of miraj founded before 1750 , former capital of pre-british state of sangli. in 1820, state divided between senior , junior branch. territory of both branches scattered among other native states , british districts.

the rulers of patwardhan dynasty used title of raja, , of same clan ruled nearby jamkhandi. raja govind rao patwardhan, 1st ruler of miraj, began cavalry commander, distinguished himself in several expeditions against nizam of hyderabad , hyder ali of mysore, established maratha ascendancy in southern india , pushed maratha conquests frontier of mysore.

miraj senior acceded dominion of india on 8 march 1948 , part of maharashtra state. miraj famous musicians, , doctors. in mid-nineties had municipal corporation in combination sangli , lost edge had on neighboring twin city of sangli 2 centuries.
