the red sandstone lighthouse @ mine head, built in mid 1800s. george halpin senior designed major light of mine head. red sandstone structure sitting on top of steep cliffs of sean phobal higher above sea-level (88 m, 290 ft.) other irish lighthouse.


local merchants , mariners youghal , cork pressured ballast board begin lighthouse tower on capel island off youghal. building begun though george halpin felt best place light on mine head. work under way when local people changed mind , decided light should @ mine head after all. after debate, including input trinity house , admiralty, decided abandon site on capel island , build on mine head.


the light established on 1 june 1851, same day ballycotton lighthouse. mine head has 22 m (72 ft.) white tower black band. converted electricity in sept. 1964. beacon flashes white , red every 2.5 sec. , has nominal range of 52 km (28 nautical miles) since sits high above sea-level. today commissioner of irish lights operates lighthouse, not open public , not accessible.
