rosalie ham sold rights of dressmaker film in mid 2000s , wrote screenplay film somehow project never took off. while missing out on rights begin with, producer sue maslin reconnected author whom hadn t seen 30 years since @ boarding school together. after initial project shelved, maslin optioned rights of novel in 2009 , brought jocelyn moorhouse on board direct , write screenplay film.


kate winslet , judy davis cast in roles of myrtle tilly , molly dunnage respectively in august 2013. ham, herself made appearance in film. filming took place in melbourne , on victoria, australia, in late 2014. film released on 29 october 2015 in australia.
