faraday maintained until 1996, when sold ukraine , renamed akademik vernadsky station.


since 1996, historic base @ port lockroy on goudier island has been staffed uk antarctic heritage trust during antarctic summer. receiving 10,000 visitors year, 1 of visited sites on continent. visitors can tour museum, buy souvenirs, post mail, , view large gentoo penguin colony.


argentine presence in territory dates foundation of orcadas base, south orkney islands, in 1903.


a number of other nations maintain bases in territory, many in south shetland islands.
